| Victorian furniture is a thing of beauty, and a little care and attention can maintain its look and appeal year after year.
However accidents and wear & tear may occur from time to time. Below is some useful advice offered by Gavan and Calvin Newstead on ways to keep your furniture looking like new.
Day to day caring for polished timber
Victorian Charm furniture is finished with lacquer and has a high resistance to heat and moisture.
- To remove day-to day dust and finger marks, a damp soft cloth should be used.
- For areas that have greasy marks we recommend, Mirotone Spray Glow Silicon Free Furniture Polish, then dry off with another soft cloth.
Remember to always rub from side to side with the direction of the grain. Do not rub in a circular motion.

Long term maintenance
If you ensure that you only use a silicon free furniture polish when maintaining your furniture, your piece can then be re-coated with lacquer with more ease at a later date if, for example, damage occurs and needs repairing.
Victorian Charm stock and recommend Mirotone Spray Glow Silicon Free Furniture Polish for Victorian Charm Lacquer finished furniture.
They also stock a range of Horward products for general furniture maintenance.

Scratches
Yes, they happen – especially with a busy family.
Scratches can be difficult to deal with, but do not despair.
- To fix scratches properly and/or get rid of them totally, the only real answer is to have an experienced tradesman deal with them.
- For a temporary and quite effective treatment that is quite satisfactory, it is just a matter of simply blending the scratch to the colour of the timber. This can be achieved by applying stain to the scratch. We sell scratch fix pens in different colours that can cover up a myriad of problems!

Caring for upholstery
Most fabric manufacturers have information on how to care for their fabrics, so checking with the place of purchase will help with specific information to deal with a particular problem.
Generally, though, all fabrics should be kept out of the direct sunlight to protect them from fading. They should also be vacuumed regularly.

Fabric sealant
Applying a sealant to fabric to protect it against stains is a wise approach. Victorian Charm sell a fabric care kit that includes fabric protection, a spot cleaner and a deodoriser.
On any upholstered furniture purchased from Victorian Charm, for a nominal charge they offer a service to coat the fabric prior to it being put on the furniture.
Early application of a sealant can protect your fabric for many years.
